Wednesday Author Website War Round 2: Cathy Park Hong vs Sandra Beasley

before reading, please do check out this post, where barbara has made an interesting comment–feel free to respond and i will respond also.

so as you might remember, i recently finished my review of cathy park hong’s DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION, which won the barnard women poet’s prize. so i became curious as to who won the most recent barnard prize. the winner was: sandra beasley! i read some of her poems online, and they are fantastic–perhaps she will be kind enough to send me her books! i’ll trade!

so let’s battle. same rules: tell me which author website you like better and why. or, if you are not into competitions, tell me one thing you like about each. or, if you havent had your morning coffee yet, tell me one thing you dont like about each. let the games begin!!!

  1. I've always liked how Cathy's website seamlessly integrated her Blogspot. If I could have duplicated that trick, I might not have given up my old blog URL. Her color palette and header fonts are also on point even though I would have changed the colors to match the colors of her book cover.

Beasley's site has a clean, web intuitive style that I like but it'd be nicer if her blog had the same look. Still, really smart design.

    Word Verification = haterbo
(Ha! They know me by my secret name)

  2. hey oscar,

yeah, i like how cathy's blog folds in the blog. but her site feels a bit like it's still under construction.

what i like about beasley's is that is has so much more! lots of links to relevant material…and how cool is the downloadable photos & cv! plus, much more pictures!

    haha–your secret name is "haterboo"!

  3. Oh dear, my website is under scrutiny! You are right, it is under construction and it's been under construction for the last two years. I've been meaning to redesign it forever. This gives me incentive!

  4. haha the scrutiny never ends when you're cool & famous!!!

let me know when the site is redesigned and i'll announce it here so everyone can see πŸ˜‰

    hope you are well cathy,

  5. this is interesting, seeing how different people present similar kinds of info. CPH's definitely goes for the spare, understated aesthetic, no extras or fluff here. SB's manages to present all the crucial professional info & buzz without seeming overly corporate or cookie cutter, and conveys a lot of personality too. of course CPH's shows personality too, esp. on her blog tab.

personality is good. probably the biggest danger about these author sites is their potential to make the writer seem too corporate, too productized. personality can resist and overcome this tendency.

  6. hey roz, thx for your comment–i def agree with what you say about the importance of personality. something def hard to quantify πŸ˜‰ hopefully will hear from you for this wednesday's website battle!
